    During days prior to appointment:
    • Carefully observe your symptoms and anything unusual, including locations of your pain and things that relieve or aggravate your condition.

On the day of your treatment:

    • Do not wear constrictive clothing.  Wear or bring clothing such as short-sleeve top and shorts, so that the arms and legs can be accessed easily.
    • This is very important.  Avoid arriving with an empty or full stomach, while being angry, or exhausted.

    After the treatment:

    • Try to have some rest, or at least avoid a heavy work schedule.

What Is The Acupuncture Clinic Visit Like?

The visit to an acupuncture clinic is very much like going to any doctor's office except for the treatment part.

On the first visit, the patient begins by filling out some forms, providing information on themselves, their health, and the conditions they want treated.  Next is an extensive interview and exam.  In the interview, you will be asked questions regarding the ailment being treated and the overall body functions.  Appropriate exams, including tongue and pulse diagnosis are made to assess the condition.

Next comes the treatment.  Depending on the conditions being treated, acupuncture treatment is performed with the patient lying face up or face down on a massage table, or sitting in a chair.  Single-use disposable needles are tapped gently into the selected acupoints, usually on the patient's limbs.  Most patients feel only a brief pricking sensation as the needles are inserted.  After the insertion you generally should not feel any pain.  The acupuncturist will then gently manipulate the needles to elicit the qi.  Patients may feel a dull ache, heaviness, numbness, tingling, or electrical sensation in the vicinity of the needle insertion.  These sensations are attributed to the arrival of Qi and signal the beginning of the healing process. In general, the needles are left in place for about 30 minutes before being removed.

Allow about one and half hour for the first visit and one hour for subsequent visits.
